Overview of Concealed Pistol License (CCW)
NEW CCW APPLICANTS
A Concealed Pistol License
Kit (CCW/CPL) can be picked up at the Office of Genesee County Sheriff Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8AM to 4:30PM (810)257-3418. The Records
Division is CLOSED ON WEDNESDAYS.
The application kit is free. Once you have completed the application, taken
the safety class*, and have a passport quality photo*; you will take your
certificate from your class, your photograph, and application to the Genesee
County Clerks Office, 900 S. Saginaw Street.
(Located in the
Genesee
County Circuit building on the second floor).
For your convenience, the
Clerk’s Office does offer photos at a cost of $10.00.
The Clerk's office will process your
paperwork; you will pay them $105.00 at which time you will be issued a
receipt. You will bring the receipt over to our office at the Office of Genesee
County Sheriff where you will be fingerprinted. Once you have been
fingerprinted, the Office of Genesee County Sheriff will send your prints to the
State/FBI for processing. Once the State/FBI have cleared the prints, the
Genesee County Clerk's office will notify you by mail when you are to pick up
your CCW card.
In the event 3 months or more have passed and you
have not heard from the Genesee County Clerk's Office please contact their
office at (810) 257-3228 and they can track your application process.
RENEWAL APPLICANTS
When renewing your CCW/CPL license, all of the
above applies except one area: There is an area on your application which
indicates; "I certify that I have completed at least 3 hours of review of
the required training and have had at least 1 hour of firing range time in the
last 6 months proceeding this application". If you meet this
requirement, sign where indicated and a class is not required. However, if you cannot truthfully attest to this
statement, you will need to take a refreshers course before applying.
*See the
list below for a list of classes. Please note there is more classes
available so shop around for the class that best accommodates your needs.
Just remember, the state requires that instructors must be certified by the
state or a national organization and trained in the use of deadly force.
The instructor must provide a signed certificate to the applicant attesting
that all of the following has been covered;
Safe storage use, and handle
of a pistol
Ammunition knowledge and the
fundamentals of pistol shooting
Pistol shooting positions
Firearms and law, including
civil liability issues and use of deadly force
Avoiding criminal attack and
controlling a violent confrontation
All laws that apply to
carrying a concealed pistol in the state
At least 5 hours of
instruction, and 3 hours of range time which requires firing at least 30 rounds
of ammunition. - and the applicants successfully completed the
course.

In an effort to make it more convenient to get the
application form for Concealed Pistol License, we've put the form online. The
process for applying for a CCW is still the same, but the form is available
here to start the process.
This form will allow you to complete an
application for a Concealed Pistol License. Complete the form, then print
it, and bring it with you to the Genesee County Clerk's Office.

Police, and requires that you have

It
cannot be submitted online.

Pistol Safety Training Classes
Everyone wanting to
apply for a new or a renewal CCW permit must take this 8 hour class at least
once. (The only exception are police officers or retired police officers who held
a valid CCW permit on July 1, 2001).
You must have a
Safety Certificate from this class before you apply at the County Clerks
office.
You can take the
Pistol Safety Course at several places.

Pistol
Safety Training Certificate that you can have your instructor complete at
the end of the course. This certificate, when properly signed, will be
accepted as proof of completion of a Pistol Safety Course by the Genesee County
Gun Board.

Passport Photo Required
You will also
need a passport photo I.D. (1" by 1 1/4"). You can purchase a
passport I.D. at several places including the following stores:

Meijers
Sears
Kinko's
Rite
Aid

Most of these stores have same day service.
Remember, only Residents of Genesee County can apply for a
CCW permit here.
A Concealed Pistol License is valid for 5 years.
