Rosalyn "Rose" Bogardus, born in 1943, started her education in a one room country school and continued to a Bachelor of Music Education from CMU in 1966.  She married Tom in 1965.  They have two children Holly (m. Scott Selesky), Jay (m. Nicole Cooper.) and two grandsons Ben and Sam Selesky.  They also adopted one of Rose’s grand nephews Edward Weeks, were guardians to two of Ed’s uncles and foster parents to several of his siblings.

Previous to entering politics Rose had worked in a variety of jobs starting with restaurant and factory work in high school and college then taught music.  When her children were young she ran a home day care.  She has been active in a variety of volunteer groups including the Flint Area League of Women Voters; Girl Scouts as a troop leader for eight years and on the executive board; Davison Business and Professional Women; Planned Parenthood and the Democratic Party.  In 1984 the Genesee County Board of Commissioners chose her to serve on a citizens committee set up to help make recommendations for building the proposed new county jail which led her to running for the county board herself in 1986.


After being elected in 1986 Rose was reelected in 1988, 1990 and 1992.  After losing her first legislative race in 1994 she sold real estate then in 1996 she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives.  She served the three terms allowed under term limits, returned to the County Board of Commissioners in 2003 and was reelected in 2004 and 2006.  When Mr. Melvin McCree announced his impending retirement Rose ran for the seat and was elected in 2008 for the term beginning January 1, 2009.  On Nov. 19, 2008 she was appointed to fill his unexpired term of office.

As a county commissioner Rose served as Vice-chairperson of the Board (1987) and  chairperson of the committees for Community and Economic Development (1987 and 1990); Public Works (1989); Government Operations (1992-1993, 2005-06); and Finance (1007-08).

Rose served as a county representative on the boards for Parks and Recreation; Community Mental Health; Metropolitan Planning Commission; Mass Transportation Authority; Priority Children; 4 C’s Child Care and the Flint Area Health Care Coalition.  She was on the Local Emergency Planning, Senior Advisory, and CORE Planning committees.

During her terms as a state representative Rose served on the standing committees for Agriculture; Education; Forestry and Mineral Rights; Human Services and Children; Insurance; Labor and Occupational Safety; and the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules.

Rose’s chief enjoyment in life is being with her family especially being a grandmother. After that she lists politics, reading, gardening and any form of music.  Starting as a self taught pianist she played saxophone in high school and bassoon in college.  She formerly was a member of a Sweet Adelines Chorus and now sings in the Flint Festival Chorus.
