BUSINESS AGENT FOR WESTWOOD HEIGHTS SCHOOLS CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLEMENT OF MORE THAN $41,000
FLINT -- Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced today that he has charged an employee of Westwood Heights Schools with five felonies related to the embezzlement of more than $41,000 from the school district.
Sue Ann Ingersoll, 48, of Clio, has been charged with 2 counts of Embezzlement over $20,000; 2 counts of Larceny by Conversion over $20,000; and 1 count of False Pretenses. Each charge carries a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and/or $15,000 or three times the value of the amount stolen, whichever is greater.
Ingersoll was suspended from her job as a business agent for the school district pending the investigation of this matter.
During an audit by the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD), which had been contracted by Westwood Heights in July of 2006 to take over the school district’s business and clerical duties, it was discovered that Ingersoll had been using a Sam’s Club credit card issued in the school district’s name to make purchases for her personal benefit and not related to school district activities. Ingersoll was one of three school district employees authorized to use the card for school district-related activities only.
Additionally, and without permission, Ingersoll had acquired a second Sam’s Club card in the school district’s name which listed her as the only administrator on the card and had her personal residence in Clio as the address for this second account.
Investigative reports from the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department indicate that Ingersoll had used the two cards to purchase more than $41,000 in personal items including gas, groceries, and clothing.
“Ms. Ingersoll thought she could get away with the perfect crime and that she would never be discovered,” said Prosecutor Leyton. “However, her actions were discovered before they could escalate any further and cause even more harm to the taxpayers and students of the Westwood Heights School District.”
Ingersoll’s arraignment and pre-trial and preliminary examination dates will be scheduled in 67th District Court.
