Prosecutor Leyton announced late this afternoon at brief press conference that he and his senior staff have met with police to review the investigative and preliminary autopsy reports concerning the death of 9-year-old Shylea Thomas. The review has led them to postpone any final decisions on possible criminal charges pending further witness interviews and gathering of additional documents. City of Flint police have vowed to work through the night to obtain the additional information requested by the Prosecutor's Office. Police and prosecutors will reconvene at 8:00AM Friday morning to continue their review and to determine their next step.
Shylea's body was found by City of Flint police inside a garbage bag stuffed into a plastic bin at a Vienna Township storage facility early Wednesday morning, April 22, 2009. Police were contacted by the Michigan Department of Human Services early Tuesday evening regarding the disappearance of the little girl who was a quadriplegic. The investigation led them to the storage facility on Saginaw Rd. in a rural part of Vienna Township just north of Flint.
