Former City of Linden Employee Charged with Embezzlement

FLINT --  Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has charged Deborah Sue Burke, 40, of Fenton, with one count of Embezzlement Less Than $20,000 for stealing money that was paid by residents for their water and property tax bills.  Embezzlement Less Than $20,000 is a felony that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Prosecutor Leyton said that Burke manipulated the City’s records in an attempt to hide her actions and that she targeted those residents who had a practice of paying their City bills in cash.  Leyton said that the Sheriff's Department investigation shows Burk stole $2,921 between May of 2008 and May of 2009.  Leyton also indicated that his office would be seeking full restitution which would go to the City's bonding company which covers the City's losses.

Burke resigned from her job in May after City officials put her on administrative leave while they investigated her actions.  She will be arraigned on the charges in 67th District Court and a pre-trial conference will be scheduled.
