SEVERE WEATHER IN MICHIGAN In 2007 severe weather across the state was responsible for four deaths, eleven injuries, and over $150 million in damages. On behalf of the citizens of Michigan, Governor Jennifer Granholm has proclaimed the week of March 29, 2009 as Severe Weather Awareness Week. The Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness encourages residents to review tornado safety procedures, and have a preparedness plan in place. With already an unusual high numbers of severe weather incidents in the southern states, it is quiet possible, Michigan could experience a more active severe weather season this year. STORM BASED WARNINGS On October 1, 2007, NOAA’s National Weather Service began issuing Storm Based Warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flash floods and marine hazards. Storm Based Warnings are more geographically specific for these short-duration weather events. These warnings are more specific to an area of threat and not geopolitical boundaries such as county lines. By focusing on the true threat area, the National Weather Service will be able to improve accuracy and quality.
